Circuit Breaker FAQs
A circuit breakers detect and stops excess currents in their tracks, protecting your family and home from fire and electrical injury.
A circuit breaker controls and protects the circuits. When a breaker trips, it opens the circuit and prevents the current flow from out of that particular electrical line or circuit. A circuit breaker is designed to trip or shut off at predetermined amperage loads for the homeowner's safety.
A circuit breaker trips for several reasons, including:
- An overloaded circuit:Â For example, using a hairdryer and iron at the same time, could overload a circuit.
- A short circuit:Â This usually happens due to a wiring issue within an appliance, which results in excess current being pulled.
- A ground fault: This usually occurs in high moisture areas, such as the kitchen and bathroom, and is why the electrical code requires Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) in these areas for your protection.
Circuit breakers are located in your electrical panel. Your electrical panel may be found in your garage, basement, hall, utility, or storage rooms. For some homes, the electrical panel may be located outside near the electric meter.
If you lose power to a particular area of your home, go to your electrical panel and search for any circuit breaker that may have tripped. If a breaker has tripped, you will notice that the toggle switch moved from the âOnâ position to the âIn-Betweenâ position. Move the toggle switch to the âOffâ position and then back to the âOnâ position to reset the breaker.
If the circuit breaker keeps tripping, turn the toggle switch to the âOffâ position, and donât bother resetting the breaker. Close the electrical panel door and call NW Power and Air at (360) 810-0678 to schedule service. Our electricians will troubleshoot the problem for you and fix it to ensure the continued safety of your home. Donât delay getting your circuit breaker serviced, especially if they are often tripping.
If you see a charred circuit breaker or notice a burning smell, turn off the main breaker to your panel and contact NW Power and Air.
There are several benefits of replacing an outdated circuit breaker in your house. Most importantly, you are ensuring code compliance and proper labeling of circuits. Other added benefits include
- Improved Level of Electrical Safety Throughout the Home
- Eliminated Any Potential Hazards with Improperly Wired or Overloaded Circuits
- Added Efficiency in Supporting the Latest Appliances and Home Entertainment Equipment
